Help For Teens When They Are Struggling
Feeling scattered, disorganized, and anxious are common symptoms of a chaotic and pressured adolescent experience. This is common in our current culture.
You can put so much effort into doing it all right and still feel like you’ve failed, or it isn’t good enough.
Parents, you can feel lost and unsure of how to support and help your teen. You might find yourself feeling angry and frustrated with them when they can’t seem to get it right.
In therapy, I’ll support your teen in learning the executive functioning and emotional regulation skills that they will use in their everyday lives. They will learn emotional intelligence and somatic practices so that they can learn about their developing emotions and how stress and anxiety feel in their bodies.
Therapy for Struggling Teens
When I work with teens, I work both with the teen one-on-one, and I support the parents in separate sessions as needed. I will even do family sessions when certain issues come up.
Individual Teen Therapy
In working with the teen, in session, we’ll explore symptoms of anxiety and stress by checking in with their body and exploring somatic practices to support stress relief. This can look like dancing, singing to their favorite music, and having access to resources such as guided breathing exercises and body scans.
Along with psychoeducation, the teen will learn the messages our bodies give us when stressed and ways to regulate their nervous system.
I can also help your teen cultivate self-worth and learn to create rewarding and connected relationships. They will also learn and practice the skills of balance and communication.
I have extensive experience working with teens, first as a teacher and now as a therapist. In my experience, teens feel a huge amount of societal pressure both from peers and social media. They also experience discomfort in how their bodies are changing and struggle with how to advocate for their own needs. The skill of communication can also feel confusing and can leave the teen feeling isolated when it goes badly.
Parenting sessions
Parenting sessions will offer support to the family system by exploring the parents’ role in their child’s healing and ways in which they can support their child in the home.
In supporting parents, I help you learn about your teen’s development and skills. We will talk about changes that can be made in the home, you will be provided with some emotional support to process feelings around your relationship with your teen.
Meeting monthly allows us to check in, make changes, and adjust parenting techniques as needed, and create a support system for the whole family.
I support parents by offering them space to explore and process how their relationship with their teen is constantly changing, and build new ways of communication.
Psychoeducation is a powerful tool to understand a teen’s development and can help mitigate the feelings of worry around not understanding what is happening for their teen. We can build new skills and behaviors together to practice empathy, understanding, and feel more connected to your teen.
Parents who work with me feel seen and supported. They report it feels uplifting to have a professional therapist support and work with their teen and family system.
Adolescents feel cared for and can truly let their guard down. I use a great deal of my own experience and natural rhythm when working with teens. This often helps them to be more open to therapy and healing. I combine my natural ability in working with youth and integrative therapeutic techniques to create a safe and nurturing environment where the whole family feels heard and seen.
